Southern California IIDA San Diego NeoCan’t 2009 Recap

Last week’s first annual Southern California IIDA San Diego NeoCan’t Event was a huge success, with 40 different manufacturers and rep groups exhibiting products, and more than 200 designers and students in attendance.

The event was created to allow those who couldn’t make it to Chicago in June to see the newest products from top commercial furnishings manufacturers. They’ve essentially brought Chicago to Southern California, where the year-round sunny skies allowed an event where products could be featured outdoors.

Kimball Facilities Win Top Employee Safety Award

We’ve always put safety first, but we’re proud to say we just received recognition for our efforts! Our parent company, Kimball International, just achieved an unprecedented five STAR certified sites under the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program. VPP recognizes employers who have the best occupational safety and health management systems, and STAR is a coveted status only awarded to employers who offer employee protection that goes above and beyond OSHA standard requirements.

The Indiana Commissioner of Labor, Lori Torres, visited us in Jasper, Indiana on Wednesday to participate in the award ceremonies recognizing our newly-certified plants. Five Kimball International facilities have achieved certification, including the Kimball Office Cherry Street plant in Jasper, Indiana, and Kimball Logistics, a shared shipping and transportation service group. The Kimball Office 15th Street plant in Jasper also achieved recertification.

Kimball International has a history of putting safety first: we were the first Indiana-based company to have a VPP STAR workplace. Soon after, we became the first Indiana company with Read more…

Research & Development: Building New Products

Last week, we talked about product design – generating new ideas, sketching designs. Now let’s see what happens next, after designs are drawn.
Douglas Prickett, Jay Henriott and Keith Metcalf, Industrial Designers, talked to me about building new products – how they create prototypes, earn buy-in, and finalize designs to make the next great office furniture product.
KO: So you’ve sketched your new product design. What now?
JH: Well, after sketches, we do renderings to further refine the concept.
DP: We sometimes hire people that make photorealistic renderings, so that everyone can see what we’ve seen in our heads. Renderings help make our ideas look ‘real.’ We give them our original models, and they create entire rooms around the newly designed product, so that we can see how it will look in actual settings.
This year, we did something different – we used photorealistic renderings to layout the floorplan introducing our new line, Fluent, for our Chicago Showroom Event in June. It was great – no one was surprised at what it looked like when we got there.
JH: The renderings give us a sense of place and aesthetics, but 3-D prints help us refine individual components and structure.
KO: 3-D prints? I’ve never heard of those. How does it work?
KM: They work just like a Read more…

Research & Development: Designing New Products

I don’t know about you, but I’m amazed by product and industrial designers. I can hardly design in 2-D, much less in 3-D…with function and innovation. Lucky for me, there are talented people out there whose creative minds are up to the challenge.
Last week, I met three of those creative minds: Jay Henriott, Douglas Prickett and Keith Metcalf, Industrial Designers. They spent a few hours walking me through how Kimball Office products are created.
KO: First things first: How do you decide where to start?
DP: The idea comes out of research, or market intelligence. We try to find an ‘unmet need,’ a specific challenge. We put together questions for whatever we’re looking to create next – desks, seating, casegoods, panel systems – you get the idea. Then we meet with customers to get their feedback, hear their voice.
JH: When we listen to customer feedback, we try to identify specific ‘pain points.’ We have to listen carefully – customers try to Read more…
Kimball Office Wins Red Dot Best of the Best Award for Minds At Work.

By Paula Schmidt
Exciting news: Kimball Office, Formway Design and Alt Group have just been awarded the red dot “Best of the Best” award in communication design for Minds At Work., our book chronicling the research behind Hum.
Red dot recognizes the highest quality designs in communication, products and design concepts. Our communication design award has won the highest honor: “best of the best,” awarded to only 56 designs out of 6,112 entries.
The red dot design competition is the world’s largest design competition. Fewer than ten percent of all entries receive awards, making it one of the toughest competitions in the world.
Winning “Best of the Best” is quite the honor – but we’re still crossing our fingers. We’ve also been nominated for a red dot Grand Prix award, a distinction given to winners whose work is “particularly outstanding.” Only five Grand Prix prizes were awarded in 2008. The award will be announced this December – so wish us luck!

Jason Hoffman, Senior IT Application Developer
Yesterday, I sat down with Jason Hoffman, Senior IT Application Developer at Kimball Office for a chance to get to know one of the guys behind the development of KimballOffice.com.
KO: What brought you to Kimball Office?
JH: I grew up here, then went to ISU to major in computer science. I attended a job fair at ISU looking for a summer internship, and Kimball Office was there. I got the internship, then interned with them every summer throughout college. By graduation, I knew this is where I wanted to be full-time.
KO: What’s your favorite Kimball Office product?
SR: It’d have to be the Skye chair. I used to have one before we moved into our new office building, and it was the most comfortable chair I’ve ever sat in.
KO: What would you say is your most memorable Kimball Office moment?
JH: Well, if we’re just choosing one moment, I’d have to say a Christmas party we held. It had a Casino Night theme, and I had a great time playing craps, even if it wasn’t for real money. But really, most of my fun memories come from when IT was a shared resource. We haven’t been Kimball Office IT for very long – we used to be an IT team that worked on all Kimball International projects and websites. It was fun having Read more…
