Have you heard our news!??! Now, 100% of our Kimball Office manufactured products are ANSI/BIFMA level 2 or 3 Certified! If you’re looking for eco-friendly products, Kimball Office is your answer! From casegoods to systems, and tables to seating, Kimball Office has you covered.
“By offering level 3 furniture in all major product categories, more than any other manufacturer, we are able to provide the market with solutions that meet growing demand for green standards. Our team has worked extremely hard to ensure we meet and exceed BIFMA’s standards for product development, manufacturing, and corporate responsibility.” Georgy Olivieri, Director of Architecture, Design, and Sustainable Strategies, LEED AP.
The BIFMA level certification program evaluates the environmental aspects of product manufacturing throughout the supply chain. Many layers of the process are reviewed, including general areas of materials and energy usage. The effects on human and ecosystem health are examined as well as overall corporate social responsibility. There are three levels of conformance, with each requiring specific prerequisites and optional credits. Level 3 is the highest level of certification.

Spring is in the air! Select Dealer, Commercial Environments in Knoxville, recently hosted a BIFMA level CEU on sustainability. Commercial Environments put their decorations and tableware where their mouths were…and impressed guests with “green” beauty.
Over 40 designers were greeted with table settings from recycled materials or materials that would be recycled after the event. The plates were made from recycled bamboo that were returned to the manufacturer to be recycled again after the event. Fabric napkins were tied with raffia, and even the tulip centerpieces were planted after the event.

ASID and IIDA members attended the CEU. Villa lounge seating was on display and used during the CEU event. The new showroom of Commercial Environments was also a highlight for those attending the CEU.
Congrats to Commercial Environments for hosting such a great event and breaking in your new showroom space!

Product Testing – How We Know Our Products Really Last

Our products are built to last a lifetime. But you’ve heard that before, haven’t you? Even so, it’s a pretty big responsibility. And it’s no small feat.
Our team of product testers accomplish that feat for us on every product we produce. They go above and beyond, putting every finish, fabric, corner, cushion, leg, door…even shipping carton to the test.
Furniture manufacturers generally ensure that their products meet the ANSI and BIFMA standards. We do too. Some of our product testing team members even participate in BIFMA committees, contributing to industry-wide standards. But beyond BIFMA, we have a few standards we’ve set for ourselves. For example, we perform bariatric tests on seating, and do impact resistance tests on our finishes. But don’t let me speak for the team. I’d rather let them tell you in their own words.
Steve Trinkel, Testing and Calibration Lab Manager, Greg Schmidt, Product Testing Technician and Dwight Slocum, Wood Technologist, took the time to give me a quick tour of the product testing lab, demonstrating some of the tests we perform. Take a look to see a snaphot of our tests, including everything from seating to packaging, finishes to fabrics. These guys really put our products through the ringer!

We’re excited to announce that we’ve just received level certification for our entire product portfolio! Kimball Office is one of the first organizations to be awarded level certification, a third-party validation of the BIFMA e3 sustainability standard, for an entire product portfolio.
Before I get ahead of myself, let me explain what the sustainability standard is and why level certification is such an honor. BIFMA is the trade association for the commercial furniture industry. The e3 sustainability standard was developed for office furniture manufacturers and suppliers. The standard is holistic, addressing every aspect of a product’s life cycle, including raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, usage, reuse (or recycling) and disposal.
Just like LEED, level certification requires certain prerequisites, optional credits and conformance levels. You can earn credits in four categories:
