Behind the Scenes: The UV Treatment Process

By Kimball Office Social Media Team
Our newest product, Fluent, is one of several Kimball Office products that uses a proprietary UV treatment process that eliminates volatile organic compounds (VOCs), reducing our products’ environmental impact and improving indoor air quality. But I’ll admit, when I think UV, I think sunscreen. What is the UV process? How does it work?

Sam Ruckriegel, Director of Finish and Wood Technology
To get the scoop firsthand, I talked to Sam Ruckriegel, the mastermind behind the UV implementation in our Jasper, IN manufacturing facilities and the planned installation at our Salem, IN facility. As the Director of Finish and Wood Technology, Sam has a wealth of knowledge about why we selected the equipment, the process and our future endeavors.
KO: Why did Kimball Office decide to implement the Pura UV treatment process?
SR: Before sustainability was a household word, Kimball Office was looking at ways to meet and exceed our industry’s sustainability standards. Kimball’s team knew that it was important to continue to strive to reduce emissions, VOCs and off-gassing to reduce our furniture’s impact on the environment. One of those initiatives was UV treatment. Kimball actually sought me out as a contractor to help them get started, and when my contract expired, I joined the team full-time.
KO: So tell me, how does it work?
SR: There are two types of UV finish that we use. One is a water-based spray. It doesn’t have any harmful chemicals – it’s a water-borne carrying agent for fluids. The other is 100 percent solid…in liquid form. Try to wrap your mind around that! If you want to get technical, it’s Read more…

KO: How did the concept of Fluent develop?
DAP: Fluent was derived from our mutual admiration and appreciation of European-designed architecture, environments and furnishings. We recognized that there was an opportunity in the North American marketplace and Kimball Office product line for a clean-lined, contemporary and meaningful solution.
KO: Tell us about the development process – how Fluent came to life.
DAP: From day one, Fluent was a truly collaborative experience. The team Kimball Office assembled was determined, competent and resourceful, which allowed us to deliver the best possible solution. Even at the get-go, I knew we were in a Read more…
Fluent: Behind the Scenes

If you were lucky enough to make it to our Chicago Showroom Event, you probably met Fluent, our newest casegoods line. If you were even luckier, you might have met David Allan Pesso, the designer behind it. But if you’re one of the luckiest, you know the whole story – how Fluent came to life.
All new lines take time to develop, and Fluent was no exception. About two years ago, I joined the product development team that would eventually create Fluent. Back then, it was just a code name, an idea. We were looking to create a contemporary series, an upscale product that was a departure from our previous lines.
We completed research to determine what, exactly was missing from available products with wood solutions. And we discovered a need for more open plan furniture – especially furniture that could easily transition from open plan to private office. Open plan furniture had always been defined by Read more…

Reconfigurable and Modular: The Flexibility of Fluent

Introducing Fluent
In these tough economic times, facilities managers and office space planners are under a lot of pressure to get the maximum value for their budgets.
Over the past year or so, we’ve talked with our customers along with architects and designers about what they want to see in our furniture lines. Their feedback helped us identify how reconfigurable and modular components were critical for office space designs in this world of fast-changing, collaborative business.
We combined the talents of our designers and engineers with David Allan Pesso, Industrial Designer and Principal at New Studio, LLC. David brought the artistic and functional design ideas we needed, and helped our engineers and craftsmen create a product line that balances a contemporary aesthetic, our manufacturing capabilities and the strict functional and environmental requirements we set forth.
The result is Fluent—A modular desking solution that combines Read more…
